Mood Disorders

MAE Behavioral health can provide treatment for mood disorders including  depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, or adjustment disorders. This list is not exhaustive. 

Identity Development/Values 

Our self-esteem is often closely correlated with our sense of identity. Knowing who we are at our core, and understanding the things that are important to us can be instrumental in shaping our ability to cope with daily stressors, communicate with others, and engage in meaningful and authentic relationships. 

Boundary Setting 

Having authentic relationships with others requires an ability to be able to communicate and express our personal boundaries. Our clinicians assist clients identify their boundaries, and explore ways to communicate these boundaries. Setting boundaries can be tough, and often requires you to reinforce the boundary, sometimes over and over. We are here to support you through this process!

Relationship Concerns

Relationships are complicated. We assist our clients better understand their relationships with others. This might be focused on relationships with friends, family members, or intimate relationships. At this time we are not offering couples or family therapy. This work is done during individual sessions. 

Trauma

Exposure to trauma can contribute to long lasting psychological effects. We assist our clients by helping them process past traumatic experiences as well as helping them develop appropriate coping skills to manage their response to  past (or present) traumatic experiences or abuse. 

Communication Skills 

Being able to effectively communicate our needs is crucial. Many people struggle to communicate in direct and assertive ways which can result in misunderstandings or conflict with others. Our clinicians can assist you better understand communication styles, errors in communication, and ways to improve your ability (and confidence!) to better express yourself.  

Our practice may not be appropriate for everyone...

MAE Behavioral Health is an outpatient mental health practice. We support individuals who are able to maintain their safety and/or functioning  on an outpatient basis with weekly, biweekly, or monthly therapy sessions. We are not a mental health crisis center, and are unable to provide 24 hour crisis management.  If you are experiencing psychotic disorders, suicidal ideation with a plan or intent, or homicidal ideation with plan or intent we are likely unable to provide you with sufficient support and encourage you to seek a higher level of care.

Our practice employs a variety of therapeutic techniques to support our clients in meeting their goals. Many of the techniques used are drawn from the following modalities of treatment. 

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT  is the focus on our thoughts (and/or thinking patterns) and how it influences our behaviors. According to this theory, our mood is the direct result of our thoughts (thinking patterns), beliefs, and behavior. This theory employs a variety of skills to help clients challenge their maladaptive thinking patterns, change negative behaviors, and increase the likelihood of positive change. 

Solution Focused Therapy

Solution Focused therapy is just that.... therapy aimed at helping clients explore potential solutions to their problems in real time. This therapy is often short term, and focuses on implementing a client's strengths, natural supports and resources. 

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT focuses on assisting clients shift their view of perceived negative emotions, stressors, or thinking patterns towards acceptance without judgement. Clients are encouraged to accept that we lack control over parts of our life but can maintain control over how we view, react to, or respond to perceived stressors. ACT emphasizes a focus on channeling our energy towards our emotional response and positive actions we can take to improve our day to day struggle. 

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

IPT assists clients identify their strengths and weaknesses in relation to how they connect with others. The goal of IPT is to assist clients form genuine connections by improving communication skills, building on personal strengths, and nurturing positive relationships with others. Interpersonal skills are taught and practiced in session, with the goal of then being applied to a clients daily life.
